Clever Dogs is run by Dog Trainer Jen Cartmel

"I was born into a life of working dogs, the daughter of a shepherd.  I trained my first working sheepdog at the age of 9, and Nap and I became members of the 4 men, 15 dog strong team that gathered sheep on the Skiddaw range.

In my mid 20’s I became interested in competitive dog obedience, so I bought my first German Shepherd and took up the sport.  

In 2001 I joined the Academy of Dog Training & Behaviour and subsequently completed their training programmes to become “ADTB Approved Dog Training Instructor”.

In 2005 I attended a Kennel Club Seminar and successfully passed all the requirements of an Obedience Judge.  Then In 2010 my dog club was granted Listed Status by The Kennel Club of Great Britain allowing me to host the Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme. This has been a very positive step for Clever Dogs Dog Training Cumbria, and gives our handlers the recognition they deserve for training their dogs to the required standard for each level.

In 2014 I began working with the Lake District Search Dogs.

I am proud to hold the position of Training Advisor for the association. I work at Pre Stage 1 training the young dogs obedience & stock control.

In 2016 I became involved with the Drowned Victim Search Dogs. I am now training Flair my 8 year old Belgian Shepherd in this area of search work.

In 2017 i completed the handlers scent detection course with the UK College Of Scent Dogs

In 2018 I completed their instructors course.

In 2019 I became an Ambassador for the UK College Of Scent Dogs 

I love the way that dog training is still evolving. The positive methods being used and encouraged in today’s training environments are producing lovely, happy, balanced dogs that enjoy doing as they are told.

You really can teach old dogs new tricks and I believe we as trainers, irrespective of our degrees of experience, should always be willing to learn a few new ones ourselves."
